For nearly two decades, I've studied how innovative schools work—and why so many promising ideas fail to scale.

Today, I lead Guide School and World Microschools, where we're putting Guide-model education into practice with real students and real schools.

In Indonesia, students using our model achieved 3.6× expected academic growth while gaining more time to grow a sustainable farm, play football, and do a plastic-recycling project.

What I've learned is paradoxical:
